I have three of these cheap, flimsy cat cube toys from Walmart — thin nylon-ish material, wire frames holding the shape, light enough that a good breeze could send one skidding across the room. Each one has a hole on three sides for the cats to climb into, and you can connect multiple cubes together to make little tunnels.

Zephyr loves them. He zips through the house and blasts straight through one, and it hangs off his butt for a second before bouncing away.

But the best cube moment didn’t involve any zipping at all.

I was playing with him with his wand toy — the ribbon kind. He wasn’t even standing up. He was just lying there, playing it cool, acting totally uninterested… the way cats do right before they attack. Well, he was lying a little too close to one of the cubes, and one of the times he swatted at the ribbon, he caught the edge of the cube instead and it flipped over perfectly landing on his head.

So one second he’s attacking the villainous wand toy, and the next second… he’s in the cube.

Here’s the thing about Zephyr. His eyes are perfectly round, so his eyebrows always look raised. He permanently has this look of mild surprise on his face. Which made this about four hundred times funnier, because now I’ve got a cat who looks shocked at literally all times, and is currently actually shocked, staring out from inside a cube he ambushed himself with using zero effort.

I laughed so hard I cried. Genuinely one of the funniest things I’ve seen a cat do, and he didn’t even have to try.
